How To Feed An Artist
I sell a lot of my writing, but I also give a lot of my writing away. I prefer doing the latter, but that sometimes causes me problems in terms of feeding my family, and paying the rent, so I don’t do it as often as I’d like.
Anyway, I was having a chat with the universe recently, and it told me to stop hiding from love. That it wasn’t selfless of me, but was in fact rather arrogant, to put art out for free into the world, as a gift, and then refuse to accept any gifts in return.
So I am, for the first time in my life, putting up a donation page on my website. Anything you give me will buy me more time to think, and write – and feed my family, and keep a roof over our heads. (The rent just went up, and today I learned that our gas bill doubles on January 1st. So it goes, for so many. At least we still have gas, and a roof.)
The other thing you can do is click on this link, and subscribe to The Egg and The Rock, over on Substack. That’s where I am writing my next book, online, in public, for free. Your thoughtful attention is the greatest gift you can give me. (Love is attention; attention is love.) There is now a paid option there, but again, that is only if you wish to give me a gift; there is no obligation to do so, and you can read everything for free there (and be emailed the latest post as I write it), whether you pay or not.
Heartfelt thanks in advance to anyone who is moved to make a gift. Don’t do so out of guilt – I like giving my writing away, and I am delighted when people read it – only do so if you feel moved to, and if you can definitely afford to. And good luck with your own journey through these strange times!
